Reasons & Solutions

Here is a summary of the most common reasons for learners needing extra lessons as well as our solution for each.

Reason:
Learner has a sudden drop in marks or a new section of work was not grasped by the learner or work is missed out on and the learner is now behind the other learners, possibly due to relocation i.e. change of school or circumstances affecting the learner’s ability to learn e.g. Illness or Family Problems

Missing out on or not grasping schoolwork, even if only a small part causes a snowball effect as work is usually based on the knowledge of previous work. Missing out on one of the building blocks in education can adversely affect the learners ability to grasp the next step in the process and all future steps.

Solutions:
The tutor will teach the work that was missed or not grasped and supply homework to ensure that everything is now understood. If the learner is taught the work immediately, then future problems will be avoided. Sometimes the learner carries on for a long period of time without having sorted out problems with certain sections of work. In this case the tutor will have to identify which “basics” were not learnt properly, he/she will teach this to the learner and then follow through by explaining the more recent work.

Reason:
Learner is not getting along with or relating to the teacher. We humans have such diverse personalities and it is therefore very understandable that occasionally there is a clash between learner and teacher. In this case the learner will absorb less of the work and perhaps lose interest in the subject resulting in the learner having a “mental block” about a subject or sections of work. Sometimes a learner will make a decision that the work is too difficult and accept that they will never excel at it; they have a negative attitude towards the subject, which affects their ability to learn.

Solution:
In the above two cases tutor will bring the learner up to speed with the work and help them regain their confidence in the subject. Learners will be motivated and mentored by the tutor and the tutor often exceeds in changing the learner’s perspective and attitude to the subject.

Reason:
Learner is younger and needs help completing homework. Many parents work full time and when they come back from work they attempt to help their child complete their homework. The parents as well as the learner are tired and often you find that they end up arguing or getting upset with each other when the work is not grasped easily.

Solution:
In this case the tutor serves more like an ‘au pair ‘and helps the learner with all his/her subjects. The tutor ensures that all homework is completed and will quickly identify weak areas that need more attention.  The tutor will also prepare the learner for upcoming tests. This takes a huge strain off the parents and gives them more time to enjoy with their children.

Reason:
Learner is very bright and wants to push his/her marks even higher. Learners who are getting 75 percent and want to get 85 percent also request extra lessons.

Solution:
The tutor will supply learners like these with challenging past paper questions and practice as many as possible, using the tutor’s guidance where necessary. Please note that we also offer home-schooling and ‘au-pair’ solutions. If your situation is not listed above then please call us to discuss it.
